Some of my oldest followers will know that I am actually from Suffolk and lived in Newmarket/Bury St Edmunds for over 18 years. I lived in Bury St Edmunds for a few months with my now husband and we loved eating, drinking and exploring the town. Ever since we left, we haven’t returned to enjoy it for ourselves. It is such a beautiful town, especially in the sunshine so we thought we’d make a visit to shop, mooch and eat.
I had seen Gastrono Me on Instagram and just knew it was somewhere I would like, especially on a hot day! So we took a trip over and LOVED it.
Situated in the middle of the hill towards the Abbey…
Gastrono Me is an independent cafe that used to be situated on St Johns Street and now has a home on Abbeygate Street, a fantastic destination for food and boutique shops. The restaurant sells itself as an all day eatery with breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner options with a fantastic cocktail list to suit any time of day – yes even breakfast!
As it was a bank holiday, we went for an espresso martini and a ‘here comes the sun’ cocktail which was passionfruit and Prosecco. My favourites! Both were delicious and freshly made and arrived quickly which always makes a difference.
The main event!
As we were in around 2pm, we went for the lunch/brunch options. I wanted something ‘light’ as it was later in the day and super hot. I was SO impressed with not only the speed of the food coming out but the amount you got.
I went for the Sante Fe Bowl which sounded like my dream meal. It was a bowl made of tortilla, chipotle chicken, avocado, a Mexican salsa of beans, butternut squash, crispy bacon (which was super crispy) and pico de Gallo.
Quite honestly, this was the most glam salad I’ve had in ages and I loved it. It even had nachos on the top which pleased me greatly as I love nachos. It was a HUGE portion, fresh and tasty. I wish I could have that for lunch everyday and already want to recreate it at home.
Dan went for the Red Hot Chilli Dog which sounded perfect for him. It was a jumbo German bockwurst covered in house beef chilli, jalapeños, sour cream and tortillas. Dan commented on how it actually was hot, which is something he loves and finds restaurants can lack in when they put chillis on some times.
He loved this and said it was really tasty, it definitely looked it. They even had a Mac n cheese version too.
The menu at Gastrono Me is HUGE, there are so many options from burgers, sandwiches, brunch options such as sourdough, rarebit and so much more. If you love fresh, varied options this is the perfect shout.
As I mentioned, they do an extensive and colourful cocktail list which for £30 a head you can actually have a bottomless brunch. 90 minutes, one main course and unlimited breakfast cocktails. What a treat that could be, I haven’t seen anywhere in Bury St Edmunds do this before.
I am already excited to return to try this again some day… I highly recommend it this summer as with the doors open, its a beautiful people watching spot on a beautiful scenic street. Check out the menu for yourself here.
