A year ago I had just returned from our honeymoon in the Maldives, ready to begin my new freelancing journey after quitting my full time role, my first since coming out of university. The first day I begun working with my main client, they let me go before I even had opened my laptop.
Getting sacked on your first day
I had just signed up for a mortgage the month before, we were getting ready to renovate. Taking the leap to go freelance was not an easy decision. For me it was all or nothing choice and since I was in a dark place in the months following my decision to leave, it took me time to build up the positivity of working alone.
Freelancing at first felt like the cop out – that I didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to work – but I knew I couldn’t work in my current role. I didn’t make a big deal online at the time about how that first day of freelancing royally pissed me off. I didn’t want to show failure within the first day, I didn’t know what to say. It wasn’t my fault.
Without that awful day, I wouldn’t be as happy as I am today. I picked myself up after a ‘feeling-sorry-for-myself-mcdonalds…large’ and started again. I knew I was built of bigger things and being let go was the biggest blessing in disguise. I had already lined up a meeting with my now director. The stars then aligned when I was given the role of Editor of Northampton Life. I am now a local magazine editor, a digital marketer, a blogger and I am most importantly everything I set out to be. Every single day is so much fun, flexible and all on my terms. The amount of opportunities it has presented me is incredible.
My new BIG announcement!
Now, I’m pleased to announced that not only am I the editor of Northampton Life magazine, a popular online magazine in Northamptonshire BUT I am about to launch our next publication, Inside Magazines – Inside Cambridge. We are stepping into my old stomping ground and taking on Cambridge with the same business but new city. Cambridge is such an exciting town with history, education, entertainment and so much business happening. I will be running both roles simultaneously which is going to be busy but super exciting. If you are local to Cambridge, do let me know your recommendations of your favourite places.
So maybe the moral of the story is, whilst life can give you shit lemons, make a strong gin, put the lemon in the glass and drink up, because life doesn’t end on one bad day.
