Where to Eat in Norwich: Soyokaze Japanese

If there’s one thing we love on a day out, shopping trip or weekend away – it’s sushi. We were very close to popping into Yo Sushi on our trip to Norwich but after enjoying the beautiful St Giles Street (which if you’ve not been to Norwich is the most beautiful street full of independent restaurants, shops and bars), we found a Japanese we needed to visit. Soyokaze Japanese is located right at the bottom of St Giles Street (closer to the market) and is an independent restaurant specialising in sushi and all things Japanese.

The lunchtime menu

Good sushi can be hard to come by but once I get a craving for it – it’s all I want. We arrived at Soyokaze a few minutes before they opened and as we were so hungry we literally waited outside until they opened the door (eager I know).

We noticed that with their pretty huge sushi menu they also had a lunchtime menu which was a selection of four options including the two we had! We thought it would be great to choose a proper meal for the lunch option as we had a busy afternoon ahead and of course, add some sushi on the side.

I went for the chicken katsu which came with a side of rice, cabbage salad and even miso soup! This was delicious and took a classic dish with a different take. It wasn’t a katsu curry, it was the breaded chicken which was so tasty and not greasy at all. For a lunchtime dish, it was a great portion!

Dan went for the beef teriyaki which looked delicious. This was thin strips of beef cooked in a sauce with a side salad, rice and soup. Dan loved this and again, a fantastic amount for a lunchtime. It was refresh and well presented. Each lunchtime deal was around £8 each which was a bargain for the amount of food provided.

The Sushi

As mentioned, we went for a side of sushi to share too. Dan is a big sushi fan and is a bit more adventurous than me but I actually went for a few pieces I’d never tried before too. I didn’t realise you could get sushi like this warm and with a bit of guess work, I was so pleased with what we got.

As it was a while ago now, I am playing a bit of guess work to what we had! But I know for sure Dan had a temaki which is a cone shaped roll which contained fish, avocado and sauce. I chose the futomaki which was thick rolls with seaweed on the outside where you got four pieces. I went for the Ebi Ten Rolls in this type of sushi which was prawn in tempura (warm), salad, mayo and sweet chilli sauce. This was delicious and due to the warmth of the prawn it was a really different sushi option.

I think a lot of people think sushi means raw fish which is like one part of sushi but not the only item available. If you like meat/fish and rice – then you’ll like sushi!

Soyokaze was such a nice change from the generic chain – as a bit of a Yo Sushi fan, I was scared it wouldn’t fit our needs as we go hard when we do Yo Sushi but it was such a nice surprise. I loved the option of having a main meal with sushi too plus the menu was extensive and they had pictures and descriptions which made it so much easier for you to choose what you wanted. I highly recommend this cute independent if you’re in the city and in the mood for proper sushi!
