I have noticed recently with an increase in food content here on The Beauty Type, I have had people around me say “How are you not the size of a house? “All you do is eat out” “You’re always eating out on Instagram.” Whilst a lot of my content is food related, its just visually appealing isn’t it. So I thought I’d give a tongue in cheek post all about what life as a food blogger is all about and the 101 on being a reviewer.
Rule #1 of being a plus one…
You cannot eat the food until I’ve taken a photo of it, make sure I get your angle and my side too. You might have better lighting than me so we need to establish the lighting aspect. You also need to ensure your hands aren’t doing something weird next to your plate when I do take a photo. Dan is ‘normally’ my plus one and he actually is the best plus one because he will always go for something that sounds like it could be visually interesting as well as tasty. He isn’t fussy and will try everything which makes for delightful photos and a well rounded experience. 10 husband points awarded.
Don’t mock a mocktail.
Sometimes where we go for lunch or dinner it might require both of us driving if we’re going after work. I have also done a few reviews in Cambridge and Milton Keynes so when I need to drive, I turn to the mocktail. Food blogger but driving doesn’t mean missing out! I’ve had a few recently which are just as good as an alcoholic drink and do not give you a headache the next day. Plus big points to any restaurant that serves them in a pretty glass so it doesn’t look like you’re missing out.

“How are you not the size of a house yet?”
Ah the humble ‘you eat so much but you don’t gain weight’ debate. Yes I’m fortunate enough to not gain weight quickly, but if I have a luxury food week, trust me, I still feel like I’ve eaten a lot. Last week I ate out three times in one week and felt it by the end of the week, I just wanted salad and greens! When I know I’ve got a good food week coming up, I’ll try to ensure we eat well on the other days. Generally though, the places I’ve reviewed aren’t that ‘bad’ or stodgy in terms of food, it can often just be the quantity I eat!
But what about if it’s bad?
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a genuinely awful restaurant to review. Naturally I prefer some over others but from a review perspective you can always see the positives and negatives of each. You also compare one to another but it’s fun to see the diverse food and drink scene around me either way. For example the food scene in Cambridgeshire is totally different to Northamptonshire I think as the demographic is quite different. I would always say if there was something I didn’t love, but I’ve never felt the need to be super negative (yet!) and I’ll probably try everything put in front of me too!

What other quirks do you find about being a food blogger? What misconceptions do you find you get asked! I love writing about food, it’s such a fun experience and one of the best perks of the job. Some of the places I’ve been have been absolutely incredible.
