Is there anything nicer than a day off during the week and visiting a new town? Last week we popped over to Market Harborough which is on the border of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. As a blogger I love taking photos of food and couldn’t resist this restaurant. The cute market town really encompasses a proper town feel with dozens of independents. It was such a sunny day too so we wandered down to The Waterfront Restaurant and Bar which is on the Union Wharf only a few minutes walk from the town centre.
The Waterfront is a lovely restaurant and bar situated on the riverside. It over looks the canal boats and during the cooler months even has little igloos for outdoor dining.
Of course, being a Friday, we enjoyed a lovely glass of gin each. I had my signature favourite, Warner Edwards Rhubarb Gin and lemonade and Dan had the Waterfront’s own blend called The Boathouse. For lunch we were so surprised by the set menu. This was ideal for lunch and had a great choice. Two courses were only £12.95 which was more than reasonable. Once we received the starter, we were surprised by the cost even more.
For starters and mains…
I had the duck and port pate which came with roasted ciabatta and herb salad, this was delicious, plentiful with lots of pate. Dan had the hot-cured salmon salad which looked incredible. He was pleasantly surprised by what he was presented with. It included roasted beetroot and asparagus – something different but light for a starter too.
For the mains, I would’ve had the scampi but they had just sold out so we both went for the fish of the day (haddock) and chips. This was a HUGE potion for a lunch meal. The fish was cooked perfectly without any heavy grease and the chips were proper chunky style. It also included mushy peas and tartare sauce. Delicious.
If we could’ve fitted it in, we would’ve tried the desserts but we were so full from the starter and main. You cannot fault the size, taste or presentation of the food. More than just pub grub for sure. I would love to return to this restaurant and the bar in the summer as I’m sure it would be lovely for a drink over looking the boats.
Have you been to Market Harborough? It’s only 25 minutes from us (and we’re just outside of Kettering) so it’s so easy to get too. It’s definitely on the list to return as the town has loads of beautiful shops and other bars to check out.
